Fermented Foods and Hormones

One group of food that has long been included in traditional diets, but can be lacking altogether from standard western diets - is fermented foods!

This type of food is crucial for healthy digestion and gut bacteria balance.  Our gut bacteria are being found to influence more and more health conditions - which isn't too surprising considering we are actually more bacteria than human cells! 

We know our gut bacteria play a large role in optimal digestion and elimination, but they also play a huge role in our immunity.  This indicates their importance in auto-immune conditions, which research is now suggesting is involved in some hormonal conditions such as endometriosis.

Our hormone balance also relies on these bacteria and a healthy digestive system to aid in eliminating any excess hormones and the toxins which can contribute to hormone imbalances. 

Our gut bacteria are also involved in neurotransmitter production - which is why they can influence mood and sleep.  

It's obvious we need to look after these guys for optimal health!

One way you can do this is by regularly including some type of fermented food.  This can include 1-2 Tbsp of sauerkraut or kim chi, using apple cider vinegar in dressings, using miso paste, or drinking some kefir.  

When buying fermented foods look for products which are unpasteurised - as this process destroys the good bacteria. 

If you have a more chronic gut bacteria imbalance, probiotics may be required in the short term to restore balance.  Then fermented foods are a great way to maintain our gut bacteria balance and improve our health in the long term. 

If fermented foods/drinks make you feel worse - you may have a more serious imbalance in bacteria or may have small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO).
