Stress and Natural Remedies

Stress is a major challenge in our lives, especially in the lead up to Christmas and as we get back into work after the holidays!  Unfortunately stress has such a huge impact on our health and wellbeing.  Here are the natural remedies I regularly use to help stressed out clients!

Herbal Remedies

Liquid herbs are usually my first remedy for wired and stressed women.  They have such a great ability to take the edge off those frazzled feelings!

Being able to mix individual blends also allows us to target the specific symptoms you experience when stressed - from anxiety to indigestion to insomnia.  These herbs are in high rotation in clinic for their supportive and calming effects - Rhemannia, Rhodiola, Licorice, Lemon Balm, Lavender and Corydalis.

Nutritional Remedies

A good quality magnesium and B vitamin complex powder works wonders, especially in cases of chronic stress.  These nutrients are required for calming our nervous system, along with supporting our mood and energy.   Stress depletes our reserves of these important nutrients, along with vitamin C and zinc - so it's important to include daily food sources along with supplements when required.

Diet and Lifestyle Remedies

Aim to include some good quality protein, fat and colourful vegetables at each meal (grass fed animal products, eggs, butter, wild fish, avocado, nuts and seeds).

Regular intake of fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kim chi and kefir is also important.  These foods support our gut bacteria which are involved in hormone and neurotransmitter production - essential for mood, sleep, resilience and stamina.

Avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, along with alcohol and too many refined foods are other ways you can reduce the burden on your overworked nervous system.

Move your body!  As often as possible!  Any activity is a great way to relieve stress - however be wary of intense exercise if you are feeling stressed and depleted - as this can be another form of stress for your body.  Choose calming activities such as yoga, walking, dancing and stretching.

Meditation - can include any hobby or activity that helps you feel calm.  Listening to music or guided meditation, working on some art, taking a bath, reading etc.

Sleep - aim for 8 hours of good quality sleep per night.  Sleep is super important for your body to rest, recover and recharge.  Aim to make your bedroom a technology free zone for optimal sleep!

These natural remedies can help reduce stress, support your nervous system and help you feel calm and composed
